Those who practice this profession as an art, as I believe we all should, uncomfortably straddle two worlds. One is an environment of building codes, zoning regulations, environmental imperatives, site peculiarities, schedules and, yes, budgets. The other is a world of fleeting ill-defined issues of a subjective nature dealing with concerns of esthetics and those far more transcendental concepts of dignity, spirituality, relevancy, the physical expression of the communities values, and ultimately how will those efforts be viewed by future residents occupying a world that we can hardly imagine.
